With our hybrid policy, there are a lot of potential environments where our people can work. Each has its considerations regarding workplace safety, ergonomics, and industrial hygiene.

All employees and managers are required to review SafetyHub and ergonomics guidance:

Before beginning hybrid work

If considering a hybrid workplace or applying for a change, employees must first ensure they’ve acknowledged the flexible work policy, confirming their remote workplace designation complies with Microsoft safety standards.

Home office

Whether employees work from home full time or sporadically, these tips can help ensure their home office meets similar health and safety standards to Microsoft facilities.

Evaluate a workspace for health and safety

Develop an emergency evacuation plan for a home office.
Review homeowner, renters or equivalent insurance to understand coverage.
Make sure the workspace is free from safety hazards, such as slip, trip and fall hazards.
Understand where to report injuries and illnesses that occur while working from home.
Inform managers of any changes to a home or neighborhood that could impact health and safety.

Establish a daily routine

Take regular breaks throughout the day.
Stay connected with managers and colleagues.

Update an address

Employees must verify their home address and emergency contacts so Microsoft can contact them while they are working from home to ensure they are safe during emergencies.

Laboratory

Working in a lab presents different risks than working in an office, so it's essential all employees working in a lab follows proper safety protocol. Employees should also connect with their lab manager to ensure they are up to date on their lab's latest health and safety requirements. It's important to review risk assessments and procedures for equipment, chemicals and processes used in labs to ensure understanding of safety controls.

Datacenters

When working at a datacenter, employee awareness of their surroundings and equipment is an important part of minimizing risk. Datacenters present unique risks compared to those in an office, so it's important employees follow proper safety protocol.

Customer sites

When working at a customer site, employees should contact their host about evacuation routes and safety and emergency procedures, including whether personal protective equipment (PPE) is needed. If the host provides a workstation, use our ergonomics resources to assess the environment.

Travel safety

Employees’ jobs aren’t limited to what they do on-site at a Microsoft campus or customer location. Many Microsoft employees spend just as much—if not more—time on the clock in a car, plane or train. Staying safe and healthy is as critical while traveling as it is anywhere else.
